The Health Benefits of Fasting

1. The benefits of fasting must be preceded by a look at the body’s progression when deprived of food. Due to the lack of incoming energy, the body must turn to its own resources, a function called autolysis. Autolysis is the breaking down of fat stores in the body in order to produce energy. When this fat utilization occurs, free fatty acids are released into the blood stream and are used by the liver for energy.” Detoxification is the foremost argument presented by advocates of fasting. “Detoxification is a normal body process of eliminating or neutralizing toxins through the colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph glands, and skin.” This process is precipitated by fasting because when food is no longer entering the body, the body turns to fat reserves for energy. “Human fat is valued at 3,500 calories per pound,” a number that would lead one to believe that surviving on one pound of fat every day would provide a body with enough energy to function normally.
These fat reserves were created when excess glucose and carbohydrates were not used for energy or growth, not excreted, and therefore converted into fat. When the fat reserves are used for energy during a fast, it releases the chemicals from the fatty acids into the system which are then eliminated through the aforementioned organs. Chemicals not found in food but absorbed from one’s environment, such as DDT, are also stored in fat reserves that may be released during a fast. One fasting advocate tested his own urine, feces and sweat during an extended fast and found traces of DDT in each.

3. A second prescribed benefit of fasting is the healing process that begins in the body during a fast. During a fast energy is diverted away from the digestive system due to its lack of use and towards the metabolism and immune system. The healing process during a fast is precipitated by the body’s search for energy sources. Abnormal growths within the body, tumors and the like, do not have the full support of the body’s supplies and therefore are more susceptible to autolysis. Furthermore, “production of protein for replacement of damaged cells (protein synthesis) occurs more efficiently because fewer ‘mistakes’ are made by the DNA/RNA genetic controls which govern this process.” A higher efficiency in protein synthesis results in healthier cells, tissues and organs. This is one reason that animals stop eating when they are wounded, and why humans lose hunger during influenza. Hunger has been proven absent in illnesses such as gastritis, tonsillitis and colds. Therefore, when one is fasting, the person is consciously diverting energy from the digestive system to the immune system.

In addition, there is a reduction in core body temperature. This is a direct result of the slower metabolic rate and general bodily functions. Following a drop in blood sugar level and using the reserves of glucose found in liver glycogen, the basal metabolic rate (BMR) is reduced in order to conserve as much energy within the body as can be provided. Growth hormones are also released during a fast, due to the greater efficiency in hormone production.

Finally, the most scientifically proven advantage to fasting is the feeling of rejuvenation and extended life expectancy. Part of this phenomenon is caused by a number of the benefits mentioned above. A slower metabolic rate, more efficient protein production, an improved immune system, and the increased production of hormones contributes to this long-term benefit of fasting. In addition to the Human Growth Hormone that is released more frequently during a fast, an anti-aging hormone is also produced more efficiently. “The only reliable way to extend the lifespan of a mammal is under-nutrition without malnutrition.” A study was performed on earthworms that demonstrated the extension of life due to fasting. The experiment was performed in the 1930s by isolating one worm and putting it on a cycle of fasting and feeding. The isolated worm outlasted its relatives by 19 generations, while still maintaining its youthful physiological traits. The worm was able to survive on its own tissue for months. Once the size of the worm began to decrease, the scientists would resume feeding it at which point it showed great vigor and energy. “The life-span extension of these worms was the equivalent of keeping a man alive for 600 to 700 years.”

In conclusion, it seems that there are many reasons to consider fasting as a benefit to one’s health. The body rids itself of the toxins that have built up in our fat stores throughout the years. The body heals itself, repairs all the damaged organs during a fast. And finally there is good evidence to show that regulated fasting contributes to longer life. However, many doctors warn against fasting for extended periods of time without supervision.

Masa Mengulangkaji..Masa Terpenting.

Oktober dah hampir kepenghujungnya..November telah mengintai kita, beberapa hari lagi kita akan mencapai November yang amat mendebarkan hati murid-murid yang akan menduduki peperiksaan SPM.
Masa itu emas, masa tidak dapat di ulang semula, cepatnya masa berlalu….aahhh…berbagai keluhan telah mula didengar oleh cikgu dari pihak guru mahu pun murid. Sebenarnya masa inilah masa terbaik untuk mengulangkaji..kerana beberapa faktor:
1.Tekanan – murid telah merasa tekanan untuk menghadapi peperiksaan…tekanan atau stress amat penting mendorong kita lebih aktif belajar dan berbincang. Tekanan yang membuatkan kita cepat memahami dan cepat bertindak. Tekanan akan menyingkirkan rasa malas dan mengantuk….
2.Peperiksaan percubaan telah selesai…murid telah mengenalpasti kelemahan diri..topik mana belum betul-betul mahir, topik mana dah ok, soalan jenis mana yang masih kurang mahir dalam teknik menjawab..konsep mana yang masih keliru..analisa kendiri atau muhasabah diri penting ketika ini untuk menampal kekosongan di mana ada..
3. Semua topik dan sukatan telah selesai diajar oleh guru…bila soalan merentas topik, murid dapat menghubungkait dengan mudah.
4. Guru juga telah bersedia berjumpa semua murid yang memerlukan pertolongan samaada secara kumpulan atau persaorangan..

Berdasarkan ini..pada cikgu..this is the best time of the year, sebab masa ni paling mudah menerangkan konsep kepada pelajar kerana tumpuan mereka 100%.

We learn from our mistakes, right? Well, maybe not as much as we learn from our successes, according to a new study.

The research, done on monkeys, suggests that the brain neurons involved in learning may process information more effectively after a success than after a failure, which in turn leads to an improvement in behavior.

The study looked at neural changes in the monkeys’ brains as they learned a specific task. The animals were shown pictures every few seconds and had to look either left or right depending on the image they saw. They learned by trial-and-error which image was associated with looking in a particular direction, and they were rewarded if they chose correctly.

The researchers monitored neurons in the monkey’s prefrontal cortex and the basal ganglia – two areas of the brain thought to be involved in learning. They found that neurons in these brain areas are indeed important for learning – they “keep track of recent successes and failures,” said Earl K. Miller, a researcher at MIT’s Picower Institute for Learning and Memory.

But what surprised the researchers was that these neurons actually became more “finely tuned” after a correct response than after an incorrect response, meaning that the neurons were able to better distinguish between the two different associations that the monkey was learning.

“The neurons in these areas improve their tuning, they learn better when the animal had a recent success, versus when the animal had a failure,” Miller said. “When the animal had a failure, there was virtually no change in neural processing, the neurons didn’t improve at all.”

In practical terms, after a success the monkeys were more likely to get an answer correct on the next trial, indicating a link between the improved neuron activity and the animal’s behavior.

Previous research has shown that there is some very transient activity in these brain areas during learning, lasting only a few milliseconds. But scientist did not understand how this short-lived activity could influence the animal’s behavior since trials are typically a few seconds apart. This study showed that the learning-associated neural signals actually lasted for several seconds.

“By careful examination of this neural activity, we [found] the signal does in fact linger, it lingers on for multiple seconds, long enough to be the bridge between the feedback the animal got from the environment and the very next learning episode,” Miller said.

Further experiments will need to be carried out to find out how the sustained neural signals relate to the previously identified transient activity. “These transient responses might be the initial signal that kicks off the sustained response, [but] we don’t know yet,” Miller said.

Learning more from success than failure would perhaps explain why we sometimes repeat mistakes. But this research seems to contradict the results of previous studies that suggest we do learn from our mistakes. However, this assumption is not necessarily true, since what we learn depends on the type of mistake, according to Miller.

“There’s lots of different types of learning, and when you say learning from mistakes, the question is what is the nature of the mistake,” Miller said.

“In our study, the situation was a reward versus no reward, success versus the absence of success … but there’s some cases where mistakes can actually lead to very bad negative consequences, like a loss of money, or loss of a scholarship. When the failure actually leads to a negative consequence rather than just the absence of a positive, that might engage learning mechanisms that rely on feedback from that negative consequence, so maybe it’s a different situation,” he said.

Virus – macam mana ni ek? Virus boleh menjadi hablur atau kristal bila berada diluar sel hidup… jadi dia boleh terbang bersama debu diudara. Apabila berjaya masuk ke dalam sel hidup dia akan membiak menggunakan organel-organel dalam sel hidup untuk membina anak-anak virus yang baru. Jadi virus guna sel-sel dalam lapisan epitelium kita untuk membiak huhuhu…

Kenapa dari khinzir ye?
sebenarnya virus ni banyak jenis.. sub jenis kepada virus-virus yang penyebab selsema manusia. H1N1 ni biasanya (normally) menyerang khinzir..( cikgu tak suka sebut babi.. ), tetapi sekarang virus yang menyerang manusia ini mempunyai kandungan bahan genetik yang hampir sama dengan virus yang menyerang khinzir, sbb tu dipanggil selsema babi (swine flu). hehehehe.. bukannya babi bersin kene manusia!! ah choooo……

Tanda-tanda.. check ok la tu kalau ade tanda macam ni.

2. batuk
3. sakit tekak
4. hidung berair atau tersumbat
5. sakit badan
6. sakit kepala
7. kesejukkan

9. ada gak yang ceret birit dan muntah.

Merebak?
senang sangat virus ini merebak..sbb nature virus boleh survive dengan senang, jadi bila org yang dijangkiti batuk atau bersin, titisan air yang terkeluar tu akan mengandungi virus dan boleh terbang bersama udara masuk ke orang lain. atau boleh juga terkena meja, beg , apa2 barang berdekatan, kalau orang yg memegang barang tadi tidak basuh tangan (malas cuci tangan) pegang hidung sendiri.. dah terjangkit… sebab tu kene selalu basuh tangan kerana kita tak sedar kita dah pegang apa tadi kan?

Macam mana nak elak dari dijangkiti yer?

Buat masa ini tak ada vaksin lagi untuk virus ni jadi terpaksa la ikut langkah-langkah berikut:
* Tutup hidung bila bersin atau batuk, buang tisu ditempat yg sepatutnya..dalam tong sampah bertutup la.
* Basuh tangan selalu
* jangan suka pegang hidung, mata dan mulut. letak tangan jauh2 ok.
* Elakan berada dekat dengan pesakit.. jangan la suka buat lawatan ke hospital kalau tak perlu.
* kalau sakit duduk rumah…jangan keluar sampai disahkan bukan H1N1.
* ikut arahan pihak berkuasa kalau kene kuarantin ..relax la kat umah (prepare la makanan, ubat dsb kerana perlu elak bercampur dengan orang ramai)
* baca doa mengelak penyakit wabak .. tanya la ustazah/ustaz kalau tak tahu.

Ceramah atau Seminar Biologi

Hmm… terlalu banyak permintaan dari sekolah dan peringkat daerah untuk ceramah teknik menjawab biologi.. dalam kesuntukkan masa tentunya hasrat sekolah-sekolah ini tidak dapat dipenuhi oleh gc biologi. Jadi dalam ruang page peningkatan profesionalisme guru, saya kongsikan sedikit maklumat dari ppt yang saya gunakan untuk membimbing pelajar saya sendiri dalam menjawab soalan peperiksaan. Diharap gc lain yang mempunyai bahan boleh la di kongsi bersama…

PPSMI?

Adakah perlu kita mulai bertukar dari sekarang atau hanya bertukar pada 2012? untuk murid tingkat 3, 4 dan 5 sekarang mungkin tidak ada masalah kerana mereka masih mengambil peperiksaan SPM dalam BI, walau pun ramai yang menjawab dalam BM
macam mana murid tingkatan 2, bila PMR dalam BI dan bila sampai SPM kene BM lak?
